There are more diplomats who have been persuaded to write their memoires. Ronald Henry Loudon needed considerable encouragement to start writing and this came from his daughter Vanessa. Ultimately this book has become much more than purely memories of the diplomatic service.
‘The Valkenhorst’ is also a family history. This history begins in 1811 when the 22-year old Scottish naval officer Alexander Loudon leaves for Java. Striking personalities from the family trees of both parents enter the picture. Important events , both in private and in international politics, enliven the story.
But the focus is on the parental home. The Valkenhorst, this is where it all began.
